Bringing the Photograph to Life

April 6th & April 20th

4:30 - 5:30 pm in the theater

Guests join Emily for an intimate 45-60 minute session in which she shares some of her most powerful images, from the Arctic to the African savanna, and invites the audience to explore what emotions and stories they see and relate to the wild on a different level. The session is conversational and immersive: Emily asks guests what they feel, what the person in the photograph might be experiencing, and what the landscape itself seems to be saying. She then takes the audience into the heart of each story, the deep stillness of a Mongolian eagle hunter, the quiet dignity of a solitary elephant, the raw vulnerability of hovering above massive Hawaiian surf. Through storytelling, Emily reveals the conversations, silences, and moments of recognition between herself and her subjects, those instances when barriers dissolved and something deeper was shared. Guests leave with a new way of seeing both photography and their own relationship with nature. This speaking presentation is part of the collection of Emily’s Fall 2026 anticipated book. The options to buy prints as part of this presentation will be available in the theater.

Emily McCulliss, whose portfolio reveals the depth of intimate knowledge she's developed of her subjects from pelagic species underwater , Africa's Big 5, to elusive snow leopards, Emily will share behind-the-scenes insights into how she gained the knowledge necessary to capture technical and emotional images across vastly different environments. Through her systematic approach to researching animal behavior, her trial-and-error process with gear selection, and her method of learning to work efficiently with equipment in extreme conditions, Emily reveals how this methodical preparation process develops the expertise needed to anticipate challenges, understand behavior and respond effectively in unpredictable field conditions by maintaining constant awareness of your gear, your positioning, your physical capabilities, and your mental state so you can set yourself up with a successful shot. This virtual deep-dive explores Emily's knowledge-building process, how she studies her subjects before arriving, what questions to seek out, how she tests and refines her gear choices, and how she learns from each challenging environment. Whether you're photographing local wildlife or planning an ambitious expedition, you'll discover practical methods for developing the deep preparation skills that transform hit-or-miss photography into consistent success.
