A matriarch does not lead because she is strongest. She leads because she remembers. Where the water sits in a bad year, which basin still holds, how far a herd can be pushed before the calves start to fail — none of it is instinct. It is learned, and it is taught the only way it can be: by walking it. The calf in this frame is being taught right now. Fifty years from now it may be the one who remembers this crossing, and the ones behind it will follow because it does.
